Phillips de Pury’s auction of Photographs on 17th May spans 162 lots, including iconic images by Williams Eggleston, Peter Beard, Walker Evans, Diane Arbus, Robert Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton, and El Lissitzky and moving into the best of contemporary photography with lots by Vera Lutter, Stan Douglas, Alec Soth, Tom Hunter, Edward Burtynsky, Richard Prince, Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama and many others.

A group of Josef Sudek works from a private collection is also offered in the auction. This group of 12 important works plus 2 first editioned signed books are part of an archive formed through personal correspondence and friendship between the owner and Sudek spanning a 30 year period. The group contains exquisite early pigment prints and silver gelatin prints from his later years and important series, ‘Labyrinths’. The prints were sent to mark anniversaries, the seasons and sometimes as an accompaniment to specific requests for certain pieces of music Sudek was trying to obtain.
